In Hindu religion Goddess Gayatri is the avatar of Saraswati Devi, consort of Lord Brahma. The Puranas cite that the mantra consists of 24 syllables and only 24 Rishis from ancient time have been able to totally comprehend the actual meaning of the mantra. Rishi Vishwamitra being the first and Rishi Yajnavalkya the last. Gayatri mantra is second most important mantra in Hiduism only after Om. This mantra has been recited since time immemorial dating back to almost 2500 to 3500 years ago when it was first written. The deity invoked in this mantra is Savitr, and hence the mantra is also called Savitri.
