Information of Yamunotri Temple, Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand

Yamunotri Temple is a cute Hindu temple dedicated to the River Goddess Yamuna Devi. This is one of the important temples to be visited by the pilgrims who go for the char dham temple visit on the Himalayas. It is situated at an altitude of 3150 meters above the mean sea level. This temple is built on the opposite side of the Yamuna glacier. This is a scenic place with cam and peace full environment. One can't forget its divinity if ones come here. It is also visited by many foreigners across the world. It is divinely located at Uttarkashi District of Uttrakhand State in India.

Yamunotri Temple Religious Significance

Goddess Yamuna Devi is considered to be a divine mother by the Hindus. Peoples coming here and taking a bath at Yamunotri will washes away our wrong deeds is what the Hindus believes. This temple is here since the ancient times. Pilgrims come here on the char dham temple circuit under taken from May to November. The winter and autumn seasons are snow fed and are not accessible to reach here. This temple opens on the auspicious day of the Akshya Thrithiya and closes after the Diwali festival are over. Specialty of this temple is that its priest prepares its ceremonial foods from the water brought from a hot spring. It is such hot that few food items can be prepared from it. This temple too gives such ceremonial food to its devotees from the food prepared from this hot spring. It is considered to have very good mineral values. Many devotees come here to take the blessings from Yamuna Devi, she is known for her divinity in the puranas. She also washes away our sins when once taken a dip or bath from the Yamuna River or from its origin glacier. Here all sects of Hindus come and get blessing for the Yamuna Devi.

Yamunotri Temple Mythology & History

As per the mythic sagas, the Yamuna is the daughter of Surya Dev or the Sun god and Sugnya Devi her mother who is a goddess of perception. Yamuna Devi is also a sister of Yama Raja or the God of death. Hence these three importances make her more divine by the Hindus and worship as her divine mother. She is been worshiped where the Yamuna River is originated since the ancient times.

Yamunotri Temple Architectural Significance

Yamunotri Temple was first built in the 1839 AD on the existing old temple by Gharwal king named the Tehri Naresh Sudarshan Shah. But an earth quake of this region caused few damages. Later the Jaipur based Maharani Gularia constructed this new temple in the 19th century AD. This is built in the Hindu Nagar pattern of architecture. This temple is built by the granites stones cut from the same mountains. There are many rocks cut steps and stone block steps built here to reach this temple area from its nearby access location. A medium sized minaret is built in conical type having a small porch on its top. The entire minaret is colored with Yellow pain with red color bordering. A small pillared porch structure is built in front of this temple joining with its main entrance. The sanctum sanctorum is just down of the main minaret. Here the Yamuna Devis idol is placed. The Yamuna Devi is a beautiful idol made out of an ebony black marble stone. This is a glittering thick black idol very beautifully carved. Nearby this temple there are two important springs known as the Surya Kund and Gowri Khund, which are the source of hot water and cold water. This temple is also located near the streams of the Yamuna River at the originating point.
