This temple place where it is built is called the Attukal and this temple name is Bhagavathi Temple, hence the place name is added first and called it as Attukal Bhagavathy Temple by its local peoples. Durga Bhagavathi, the word Bhagavathi literally means Devi, Maa or Goddess in Malayalam. The primary deity of this temple is Durga Devi. She is known to be the incarnation of the Adhi Para Sakthi. This temple is worshiped by all sects of Hinduism. This temple does not allow rituals and ceremonies such as Ottam, Divasam and Thottampaattu. Rest of all rituals is done here with avoiding red color flowers. This temple only uses Nandyarvattom, lotus, jasmine and tulsi petals and flowers.
