Thirumandhamkunnu Bhagavathy Temple is an ancient Hindu temple on the hilltop of Western Ghats of Central part of Kerala. The name Thirumandhamkunnu Bhagavathy literally means the hilltop goddess in Malayalam language. The Badhra Kali is the primary deity of this temple. This is a typical Kerala temple with lot of historic and architectural values. It is located in a very beautiful scenic place. The view seen from this hilltop provides you the beautiful view of scenic village down below. This temple is captured in many of the Malayalam films. This temple is famously located at Angadipuram Village, Malapuram District of Kerala State in India.

Thirumandhamkunnu Bhagavathy Temple Religious Significance

Thirumandhamkunnu Bhagavathy Temple is mostly popular among the women hood, since it conduct a special ritual called the Manghalya Pooja. This pooja is believed to protect a married couple or give for life to the male partner if worshiped by married women. An unmarried woman can also pray for getting married soon for those who have marriage obstacles. Apart from Manghalya Pooja the Kalampattu, Rigveda Laksharchana and Chandattam are the other religious offering done here. This temple is worshiped as Thirumandhamkunnil Amma by its villagers. It was the most adorned tutelary deity of Valuva Nadu royal's family since the ancient times. Many devotees from throughout Kerala take pilgrimage to this temple when nearing its festival dates. The Attanga Eru is an important event happening in this temple which carries out throwing of Attanga seeds by her devotees. This temple conducts its daily rituals form early morning 6:00 AM to evening 7:30 PM. Here 104 offerings are performed which are general and few are paid ones. This temple is opened throughout the year.

As per mythic belief, it is said that Parvathi Devi came here to get her favorite Shiva Linga which was offered to King Mandhatha. She fought with him and was surprised to see his devotion to her husband. Instead she made abode nearby him so as not to depart from her favorite Linga. That's how the temple came in to existence in the ancient time. This incident is mentioned in the ancient texts of Hindus found in the Dravidian regions where the Lingas carried from the abode of Lord Shiva is described at various places of this sub continent.

Thirumandhamkunnu Bhagavathy Temple Architectural Significance

Thirumandhamkunnu Bhagavathy Temple is a traditional Kerala temple where its creator is unknown. The present temple is a vast temple on the hilltop of Angadipuram. This temple's lower part is made of laterite stone and the upper parts are totally covered with woods. The ceiling is found in a sloped manner with cover of terracotta tiles. In front of this temple it has got a huge people tree which is covered with a foundation alongside the stone laid steps towards the main temple. There are many wood crafts works in this temple. The temple domes are found in triangular and pyramid shapes. It has got one of the beautiful porches which are very traditional made of woods. There is a high temple flag pole covered with brass sheet. A single stone lamp tower is also seen near by it which has 11 plates for lighting.

Festivals Thirumandhamkunnu Bhagavathy Temple

The 11 day Puram is the most important festival of Thirumandhamkunnu Bhagavathy Temple, which comes in between March and April every year. The 11 days are totally filled with pilgrims coming from different parts of Kerala. Each and every day of this festival time is linked to special ceremonies, Chendal Melam, elephant procession. The Kerala traditional dances like the Katha Kali and Theiyam Thullal are important features of this festival. Secondly the Njaralthu Sangeetholsavam is a classical songs festival conducted by this temple in memory of Nheralath Ramapothuval who was a renowned singer of his time. This festival is annually conducted on 16th February and thus during this festival season, Keralities from all over, come to be the part of the celebration, which is celebrated in a grand way.
