Information of Sri Krishna Matha, Udupi, Karnataka

Sri Krishna Matha is a renowned Krishna temple in Udupi of Karnataka State. This is an ancient Hindu temple built in many stages of time. The main structure was erected in the 6th century AD. It has a unique story behind its formation. This is also a Math, were devotees are allowed to stay in the nearby complexes. It conducts daily poojas and this temple is daily visited by its local residence and by tourist. The main festival is the Paraya, which is celebrated over a phase of 2 years. This is the most important festival where thousands of people gathered here to see this grand festival. On the Srikrishna Jayanthi and Navarathri are celebrated here very grandly with lot of cultural activities.

Sri Krishna Matha Religious Significance

Lord Kirshna is the most beloved god for the Hindus. This lord belongs to the Vishnu sect and is also worshiped by the Vaishnaviks in India. But Sri Krishna doesn't come under any sect of peoples and he is worshiped by all Hindu peoples. This is a holly place since the ancient times. Many pilgrims come here on yearly visit and worship here.

Sri Krishna Matha Mythology & History

This temple was built here from the Sri Krishna sculpture brought by a saint called Madhwacharya. As per records the sculptor came in a ship from Dwaraka and while nearing Udupi a strong storm washed this ship to its shore and left this sculpture on its shore. He decided it as gods send and to honor him he placed this black stone sculpture in this temple. From the 13th century to till now, it is an important place for worshiping Sri Krishna. Madhwacharya was a great scholar of Vedic studies of his time. To propagate his ideas on Dasa Sashtra and Davita vedantha be built 8 Math's around this famous temple. This later became a learning place for the puranas and a famous worship place of Lord Krishna in Udupi over the passage of time.

Sri Krishna Matha Architectural Significance

Sri Krishna Matha temple is found in Dravidian architectural pattern on its stone works. This temple was built at many stages and few modern complexes are also found in side these temple complexes. There are brick made structures with terracotta tiled roof on it. These roofs are in a slanting position and look very great with wooden works on doors, windows and its roofs. The main entrance for this temple is an arched pillar built of single stone. This is accompanied by a four pillared verandah and a mortified arch. The inner side of this temple is looking very auspicious with a centrally built large square shaped pond. There is a small temple like structure in the middle of this pond and it has a mini bridge to reach here from the main corridor of this temple. There are beautiful stone art found in its structure. It has got very beautiful motifs all around this temple. Apart from stones, there are also wooden marvels found here in traditional style. This temple has got two chariots. It is the first think visible in front of this temple, it's big and beautiful. One Ratha is made of wood and the other found in gold. The golden chariot remains inside this temple. This is very beautiful to look with a golden horse statue pulling this chariot. The wood carved chariot is taken to procession. This has unique carving works from top to bottom of this chariot. It has a cute room for placing the deity. This chariot has a globe like structure on its top with a traditional umbrella. The mid part of the chariot is fitted with two temple flags.
