The Perur Patteswarswamy Temple (Perur Patteeswaram Temple) is dedicated to the famous and revered Hindu God, Lord Shiva. The main deity of the temple is referred to as "Patteeswarar" and his wife or rather Goddess Parvati is commonly known as "Panchanayaki". The temple is believed to be closely connected to the cosmic dance performed by Shiva and the idol which is worshipped in the shrine is known as "Swayambhu Lingam" which further means "self emerged". The temple is considered to be quite ancient and is located on the river banks of the sacred river called Noyyal which is also referred to as "Kanchi Manadi" locally. The temple is also considered to be amongst the best acknowledged Shivastalams in the Kongu region. The temple is also commonly known as Arulmigu Patteswarar Thirukoil. The temple includes several entrance towers among which one has the statue of Nataraja in gold. Apart from the shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, there exists other places of worship as well which are dedicated to other deities such as the Ganesha, Virabhadra, Oordhva Thandava, Gajasamhara, Bikshadana and Goddess Saraswati along with a Veena.
According to the mythological records it is believed that the earthly remnants of the deceased get converted into white coloured stones after a period of about 144 days. There is known to exist quite a bizarre tale regarding the construction of the temple. According to the account of the tale, a calf related to the heavenly goddess Kamadhenu who is known to be the "Mother of all Cows" accidentally collided with a solid object while the calf was busy in playful activities in the forest of Arasu trees. The calf was injured and blood poured out from the little one. It was later discovered that a blessed "Shiva Lingam" emerged from that particular place and this incident led to the construction of Perur Patteswara swamy Temple here. The historic significance of the Perur Patteswarswamy Temple during the ancient times can be derived from its mention in the poetries written by eminent poets such as Kachiappa Munivar and Arunagiri Nather.
The temple displays a typical Dravidian form of architecture and is supposed to have been constructed by King Kankala Cholan about 2000 years ago. It needs to be mentioned in this regard that the sanctum of the mentioned temple is a result of a combined attempt of the Hoysala, Chola and the Vijayanagara rulers at the time of their individual reigning period. The Perur Patteswarswamy Temple's one of the supreme elements of appeal is the Kanaka Sabha. The Kanaka Sabha actually refers to a huge golden hall with a classic Dravidian touch of architecture. The hall is further beautified with the presence of a Nataraja statue which is plated with gold and the Lord is found in a position where he is conferring blessings on the great sages Pattimuni and Gowmuni. The entrance towers along with the pillars of the mentioned hall are found to be adorned with intricately carved sculptures.
