Information of Mahabhairab Temple, Tezpur, Sonitpur, Assam

The popular Mahabhairab Temple is situated in the north of a town called Tezpur in the state of Assam. The temple is known to be a splendid sight which further adds to the appeal and magnificence of the mentioned attractive town. The temple is known to be quite ancient and is situated on the summit of a small hill.

Mahabhairab Temple Religious Significance

The Mahabhairab Temple is dedicated to the revered Hindu god, Lord Shiva and is said to have been constructed by a monarch named Bana from the ancient period. King Bana is believed to be the first one to have launched the religious group called Phallus along with the adoration of the Lord in Assam. The mentioned temple is assumed to be amongst the oldest shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva in the entire region. Lord Shiva is worshipped as or in the form of Mahabhairab in this temple. Bhairava also popularly known as Kala Bhairava is said to be the violent demonstration or appearance of Lord Shiva and is related to total destruction. The Shiva Lingam of this temple is assumed to be amongst the biggest Shiva Lingams across the world. The temple is considered to be quite an imperative place for pilgrimage in Assam as it is believed to spread the message related to admiration and divinity across the town of Tezpur. Bana, the king from the prehistoric period is stated to have engraved the initial form of the temple structure which was later renovated by other monks and followers. The occasion of Shivratri is celebrated in a grand way by the temple administration or authorities. A week long carnival takes place during the occasion which is popular throughout the state. An usual practice of freeing pigeons is practiced by the devotees as a contribution or mark of respect towards the Lord. The sight of numerous pigeons flying around the place is considered to be spectacular.

Mahabhairab Temple Mythology & History

As per the mythology, it is said that Banasura, the demon king protected a Hindu shrine which was devoted to Lord Shiva and dedicated his heart as well as soul in the process. Banasura is acknowledged to be the first one to have initiated setting up of the "Shivlingam' in the mentioned shrine in the form of an imitation of Lord Shiva.

Mahabhairab Temple Architectural Significance

The temple was originally constructed with stone unlike the present structure which has been modified later. It is learnt that at the time of the Ahom reign, the monarchs particularly from the Tungkhungiya dynasty contributed hugs areas of Devottar property to the Mahabhairab Temple and paiks as well as priests were selected whose prime responsibility was to take care of the temple. According to few of the archaeologists, it is supposed that the Manashairav Temple was constructed by the monarchs from the Saalasthambha dynasty during the period ranging from 8th to 10th century A.D. The temple was originally a stone made structure which becomes quite apparent from the large pillars that are found to be scattered in and around the temple area. However, the previous temple structure was obliterated with time which was later again reconstructed by consecutive rulers as well as monarchs. Sadly, the reconstructed temple also suffered heavy damages owing to the disastrous earthquake that took place in the year 1897. The current temple structure was probably established during the beginning of the existing century by a worshipper and reverend named Sri Swayambar Bharati who was also popularly known as Naga Baba.
