Among other sacred places in Vrindavan, Madan Mohan Temple is regarded as more respected one. This temple has the difference from other temples by being the oldest temple in Vrindavan. Madan Mohan Temple is not merely a place for worshipping, but also is a traditional structure which has stood the test of historical event.

Madan Mohan Temple Religious Significance

Madan Mohan Temple is closely related with the popular saint named Chaitanya. He was a reputed monk and a social activist of eastern India during 16th century. It was the personification of supreme god Krishna and was considered as the Iron Phase of Kaliyug. The original Madan Mohan idol was transferred from Vrindavan to Jaipur when Mughal king, Aurangzeb attacked Vrindavan in the year 1670. The original idol of Madan Mohan is believed to be exactly similar to the image of lord Krishna from the waist down.

The deity of Madan Mohan along with lord Krishna is worshipped in Madan Mohan Temple. Apart from that idols of goddess Radharani and goddess Lalita who were transferred to Vrindavan by the son of king Prataparudra is also worshipped here.

Madan Mohan Temple Mythology & History

There is quite interesting legend which is related with the creation of Madan Mohan Temple. Once there was a trader in Vrindavan named Ram Das Kapoor. During the voyage, his ship which was full with considerable amount of tradable goods, went aground. This was quite disastrous for Ram Das where he would have confronted severe monetary losses. After getting guidance from Sanatana Goswami, he prayed to Lord Madan Mohan for assistance. Lord Madan Mohan eventually reacted with his genuine prayer and his ship was rescued. He also gained considerable amount of profit from the trade deal and thus decided to contribute the money gained from the deal to create a temple for the honour of Lord Madan Mohan. As for Santana Goswami, he was the person who was assigned with the duty of worshipping the idol of Madan Mohan and he was the one who recommended Ram Das to construct a temple. In reality, the original idol of Madan Mohan was created by Advaita Acharya during his tour to Vrindavan. He gave the idol to his pupil named Purusattama Chaube who again offered it to Santana Goswami. After the construction of Madan Mohan Temple, the idol came to be worshipped there.

Madan Mohan Temple is located on the top of a 50 feet mount named Aditya Tila. It was opened for devotees in the year 1580. Till then, the temple is visited by considerable number of devotees. However, the idol which is present in Madan Mohan Temple is not the original one. It is merely a copy of the original one which was shifted from Vrindavan to Karoll. The shifting was done for safeguarding the original idol from the assault of Mughal king Aurangzeb.

Madan Mohan Temple Architectural Significance

Although, the idol which is presented in Madan Mohan temple is not the genuine one, still the temple is a fine example of traditional architecture in Uttar Pradesh. The structure of the temple is old yet quite imposing. On one side of the temple, there is a Bhajan Hall which is dedicated to Sanatana Goswami. In the back portion of Madan Mohan Temple, there is the tomb of Sanatana Goswami.

Inside the Madan Mohan Temple, there is a hall named Grantha Samagra which encompasses multiple original scripts, created by Sanatana Goswami. The mind of devotees is definitely be filled with certain peace after visiting the temple and throwing prayers to lord Madan Mohan.
