Kasar Devi Temple is a Goddess temple which is considered to be very divine and powerful by the Hindus. Here the Kali or Bhagavathi is worshiped as Kesar Devi. The Navarathi is the main festival of Kasar Devi Temple. It is very grandly celebrated by the residents of Almora. It is also visited by many Himalayan temple circuit pilgrims. The entire two weeks is filled with colors and lights making this place more divine. Many major rituals and ceremonies take place during this festival time.
Since 2nd century AD, the Kasar Devi Temple is recorded in the Skandha Purana, which is an ancient text of Hindus. But this temple was popular among its tribal peoples for centuries. This temple was brought to light by many spiritual leaders who came to meditate here. These spiritual persons were Swami Vivekananda who came here in 1890's. The Alfred Sorensen who is also known as the Sunyata Baba stayed here for many years since 1930's. They reported about the presence of a divine power in these areas. It is said that this place is exposed to Van Allan belt, that's why a special natural powers are felt among peoples who comes here. Since from 1960's with the effect of Sunyata Baba many Hippest came here in search of spiritualism. There are few caves near this temple, which became a favorite spot for the Hippest on the Himalayas. This is also known as the Crank's Ridge alongside the Sunyata's cave. Still many foreigners come here in search of spiritualism and worship this temple and meditate on these hills. This is also an important Buddhist area in the ancient times and most of them where from the Tibet.
Kasar Devi Temple was a small stone structure since the 2nd century AD. The creator of this temple is not known so far. But this temple was built up in the Nagara Style in the medieval times and got destroyed in the land slide occurred in the early 18th century. The present temple is seen with a touch of Hindu and Buddhist structure. This temple is built over a creek having an elevation of 2116 meters above the mean sea level. From this temple good picturesque view of the Himalayas and a fine place surrounded with deodar and pine forest all over the mountains are seen. This is a main arched entrance from few meters away from the temple area. This arch is attached with a brass bell in the center. From here a stone slab path way takes you to the main temple in an elongated way. The main temple is a huge tower with a conical dome on its top. This is a circular structure having a porch with pillared verandah on the outer side on the ground level. The main deity is placed in the center of the temple structure. This temple is painted in white with a red color bordering on its edges.
