Kalkaji Mandir is also identified as Kalkaji temple is basically dedicated to Goddess Kali. In the southern part of Delhi, the temple is situated in Kalkaji Mandir (Delhi metro) which is a society that has attained its name from the temple itself. It is believed that the idol in the temple is self-manifested and the temple dates back to the Satya Yuga when Kalika killed the demon named Raktabija as well as other big demons. Although, the temple is visited by the devotees throughout the year, but flock of pilgrims can be seen during Navratri twice a year.

Kalkaji Mandir Religious Importance

The temple is considered to be one of the ancient temples and is most worshipped temples in India. The temple is also well known as Manokamna Siddha Peetha where Manokamna means desire, Siddha means fulfillment and Peetha means Holy place. Hence, it is said that this place is visited in order to attain blessings of Maa Kali for the accomplishment of their desires.

Kalkaji Mandir Mythology & History

Though there are scriptures that tend to explain various references as well as legends related to the birth of Kali, the history that entails regarding the conditions leading to the birth of Maa Kalika Devi can be understood in detail. It is often said that numerous years ago, the gods who resided in the area of the present temple were disturbed by two demons and were obliged to prefer their complaint to Lord Brahma. However, Lord Brahma did not interfere in the matter and referred the problem to Maa Parvati. Kaushki Devi came out of the mouth of Maa Parvati and assaulted the two demons and murder red them. However, it was observed that the demons blood fell over the earth and many monsters became alive. The encounter was handled by Kaushki Devi. Maa Parvati took sympathy of her children and from the eyebrows of Kaushki Devi Maa Kali arrived. It was found that Maa Kali opened her mouth wider and drank the blood of the killed demons. This way Maa Kali was capable of attaining victory over the enemies. It is believed that since that day Maa Kali resides in this place and she is worshipped with great respect and dignity. It is believed that during the sovereignty of Yudhisthir in Mahabharata, Lord Krishna and the Pandavas worshipped this place.

As per the government records, it is said that the Kalkaji temple has a very old origin, but the ancient part of the present building was constructed after 1764 A.D. by the Maratha rulers. It is said that Mirza Raja Kidar Nath made some additions to the temple in the year 1816 AD. One can get to see a considerable number of Dharmasalas in the surroundings of the temple by the merchants of Delhi.

Kalkaji Mandir Architectural Importance

The complex of the temple is build of brick stonework, finished by marbles and has a pyramidal tower. The Central Chamber has been paved with marble and has a verandah 8'9'' wider. It has around 36 arched openings. The verandah tends to surround the Central Chamber from all the sides. In between the arcade and at the opposite side of the eastern doorways, one can see two sandstone tigers that have been placed upon a marble pedestal. The inscription that has been carved over the marble railing is repeated. The language over the inscription is Urdu and you can see that the characters over the railings are nastaliq.
