Sri Jagadamba Mahakali Temple is located at Golkonda on the top of the fort, in Hyderabad district, in the state of Telangana, in South India. It is an ancient Hindu temple that is strongly believed to be more than 900 years old in this hilly region. It existed while the basic fort was successfully built by Kakatiya rulers based at Warangal. Later, it passed on to the hands of the initial Islamic dynasty of the Bahmani Sultans of Deccan region. It also stayed intact during the Qutub Shahi Sultans. This particular temple lies between the emperor's palace and Ibrahim mosque.

According to the local legends, Sri Jagadamba Mahakali Temple in Golkonda existed many centuries ago in this hill top. It was found by the local shepherds who grazed their sheep and goats in the hilly terrain. Even though Kakatiya rulers based at Warangal had build their basic fort on this hillock. Later, the Islamic rulers occupied this hillock and built their new and extended Fort. It is to be remembered that the Muslim community rulers and its local people respected this temple so they never ventured to destroy it.

Sri Jagadamba Mahakali Temple Architecture Significance

Sri Jagadamba Mahakali Temple looks like a cave temple in certain aspects. The 300 stairs or steps that leads to this temple is decorated with vermillion and yellow marks by the devotees who visit every day with lot of commitment and dedication. It is to be highly noted that two fierce gatekeepers with long whips directly welcome the devotees to the temple. According to the local legends and historians, there existed a long tunnel just under the temple that leads towards Charminar. It is still a mystery regarding why this tunnel wasn't used by the King and other people as escape route when Aurangzeb lay seize to the Fort of Golkonda. At present, this tunnel is sealed. The walls and pillar of this temple have inscriptions that aren't much clear at present. The flooring and ceiling of this cave temple is really very attractive as it reflects its ancient building structure making. It is to be highly remembered that Sri Jagadamba Mahakali Temple was built by ancient people based on Hindu cave temple architectural styles and patterns to a great extend.

This temple is known among the devotees of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secundrabad for its Bonalu festival celebration that is conducted in a religious manner with lot of perfection. A large number of women with colorful flower decoration visit this temple during the Bonalu festivity. In this temple, special poojas are conducted as per Vedic rules and regulations during the festivity period to a great extent.
