Immense religious significance is showered on the Govind Dev Ji Temple owing to the idol of Govind Dev Ji which is believed to have been principally housed by the Vrindavan temple in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The idol of the Lord is stated to share a stark similarity with none other than the Lord himself that is Lord Krishna. It is widely and strongly believed that the temple's idol looks accurately like the form of the Lord during the time of his embodiment on earth.
According to the legends, the representation of Lord Govind Dev Ji was also known as "Bajrakrit" which further relates to the notion that it was developed by the Great Grand Son of the Lord. Bajranabh. It is said that about 5,000 years ago when the age of Shri Bajranbh was about 13 years, he questioned his Grand Mother regarding the way Lord Krishna looked. According to the description given by his Grand Mother, he created an image. However, the image was far away from what the Lord actually looked like except for the image of the feet which actually looked similar to that of Lord Krishna's. Bajranabh created another representation of the Lord which also did not match with the actual appearance of the Lord except for the portion of the chest. After this, Bajranabh made another attempt and created the third representation which finally looked exactly similar to Lord Krishna. The first image was known as Lord Madan Mohanji, the second representation was acknowledged as Lord Gopi Nathji and the third image which was close to perfect became popular by the name of Lord Govind Dev Ji. With passing time, the mentioned divine images got erased from the reminiscences of people. Around 500 years before, Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was born who later took the initiative of locating the sacred places associated with Lord Krishna as mentioned in Bhagvat Purana. According to the Indian society, Lord Krishna was believed to have appeared in the form of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. He was successful in discovering a few of the sacred places in Vrindavan Dham, a task which was later carried out by his followers. The same representation of Lord Krishna was brought to Jaipur and was installed in the Govind Dev Ji Temple and thus, the stated temple is considered to be quite an imperative shrine outside Vrindavan especially for the devotees of Lord Krishna.
The Govind Dev Ji Temple is situated within the area of the City Palace which once served as the official place of the Maharaja of Jaipur. The temple was actually constructed in the year 1735 A.D. by the renowned Sawai Pratap Singh II who was a devoted follower of Lord Krishna. The temple is surrounded with outstanding backyards and the ceiling is adorned with gold. The temple displays architecture quite typical to the pattern observed during the reign of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in the city of Jaipur.
