Dhauli Nag Temple is a Hindu temple built for the Serpent God, which is located at Vijayapura Town, Bageshwar district in Uttarakhand State of India. This is a cute temple in the Kumaun region of the lower Himalayas. This is an important temple for the Hindus to worship an ophidian, which are sacred and also fear full. It is located at an altitude of 1004 meters above from the mean sea-level. This temple is situated in a natural scenic place along with the Daya River. Dhulinag Temple located amid the scintillating natural beauty has got its name from Dhawal Nag, which means "White Snake". During Navratri the temple is at its best, decorated stunningly making it way for the devotees to offer prayers and seek blessing from the deity which is praised in the form of Nag Devta.

Dhauli Nag Temple Religious Significance

Dhauli Nag Temple literally means the White Serpent Temple. The serpents have significant mythical values with the Hindus. The Nag-Dosh (Serpent Sins) is considered as a bad time phase in the natal chart of a person. These ill effects of Dosh can be little bit petty down in one's life by visiting a serpent god temple. This temple is also such important snake temple for the Hindus. The fear full worship is done by those affected by the nag Dosh. Other Hindus also come here to worship as a sacred creature, which is common to all sects of Hinduism. A Nag temple can be worshiped at any time and the full moon and the new moon occurrence are the most auspicious days for this Nag Temple. During these occasions the nearby villagers gather here to please these serpents' gods to not harm their lives. For this purpose they please the serpent gods with its favorite food articles as offerings.

Dhauli Nag Temple Mythology & History

Serpents are the reptile procession of Lord Shiva and Vishnu. These are considered as sacred creatures in the Vedas. A large serpent was used to make ambrosia by the heavenly gods and the earthly demons. There are many mythical stories related with these serpents. The temple was built here to please the snakes which usually come out in the monsoon rains. The villagers pray here to not harm their civilization. Since the ancient time the presence of this temple is recorded. In the 10th century AD the king of Nepal has gifted few Brass Bells to this temple. It is also a tutelary deity for the Kumaun rulers and for many of the tribal villagers since the ancient times.

Dhauli Nag Temple Architectural Significance

This is a beautiful temple built in the Nepali Hindu style. It is a rectangular shaped structure with 2 cylindrical domes on its top. These domes are covered with 2 conical caps and have a brass ornate on its peak. This temple is painted in multicolor and looks very appeasing. There are many Hindu religious symbols drawn as motifs along with the border fronts of its terrace areas. The sanctum sanctorum is directly placed under the main dome which I located at the back of this temple, were the Serpent God is placed. This beautiful temple is located at a height of 3000 feet it is in the midst of dense vegetations. It is a modern temple having a fine granite slabs grounds. The ancient temple was just an idol placed in the open ground. It was later developed by many rulers of this regions and the present temple looks in the modern construction style in geometrical shapes.

Festivals at Dhauli Nag Temple

The Nag Panchami and the Kumaun festival are the most important one. The Nag Panchami is the day for the Serpent God and it is worshiped here with great devotions. There are many rituals and ceremonies conducted here on this auspicious occasion. More than thousands of devotees gather here to make it a happening festival. The Kumaun festival attracts lakhs of pilgrims to circuit the Char Dham and the abode of gods in the Himalayan Mountains. This temple is also visited by these pilgrims in the four months seasonal festival conducted here annually.
