Chennakeshava Temple in Bangalore is a very ancient Vishnu temple believed to be built by the Arjuna of the Mahabharata period. It has a long standing history from the ancient times and was finally restructured in the Vijayanagara empire time. The present temple is the architectural marvel of the Vijayanagara architecture. The main deity of this temple is the Maha Bhagavan Vishnu. This temple is well known for its history and stone architecture. Chennakeshava Temple Mythology & History

As per the mythological records of the Vedic texts, the Arjuna of the Pancha Pandva's visited this place after the great war of Mahabharata held in the Indian Sub continent 7000 years ago. He built a small temple of Bhagavan Maha Vishnu and prayed here for peace and progress of his Bharatvamsha's. Since then, it was a favorite temple of its tribal's living around it from the ancient times. The original temple is not known how it was, but in the Vijayanagara period this temple was renovated in the Vijayanagara architectural form. It later became a popular temple in the medieval period. Even though many rulers ruled this region, this temple was always taken into consideration by those rulers and respected it. Presently it is a local temple for the Banglorites and also a tourist spot.

Chennakeshava Temple Architectural Significance

Chennakeshava Temple has the finest craftsmanship of the Vijayanagara architectural pattern. This temple does have some touches of the Dravidian style in its minarets. There is unique stone art work carved on its giant pillars. One of these pillars has the depiction of the Ramayana events on all side of its huge pillar. The second pillar is carved with the stone art of Lord Yoga Narashima, the boar form of Vishnu called as the Varaha, and beautiful carving of the fish and an eagle. The third pillar has the depiction of Veer Hanuman and the pictures of Kamadhenu, which is a holy cow in the Hindus mythology. The fourth pillar is seen with the stone art of the Bala Rama, Vali and the Sugriva of the Mahabharata legends. These pillar carving on a monolith stone look's very and it is the major attraction found here. This temple has got a big idol of Maha Vishnu as its main deities. Its sub deities are seen on the both the sides of this main idol. This temple is built in square shape having a sharp Gopuram (Tower) directly placed on the main Garbha graham. The entrance can be found with a small mandap, it has the main door to this temple. This temple is covered with stone slabs on its roof and these roofs are supported with huge single stone pillars. Top of this roofs are having two towers at the front and the back portion of this temple.
