The temple of Chaturshringi is considered as one of the holiest places In Maharashtra. The deity of goddess Chaturshringi is being worshipped here in the form of prime idol of the temple. The goddess is also considered as the main deity of Pune in the name of Goddess Ambareshwari. The festival of Navratri is greatly observed beside the temple. On that day a huge fair is opened for the visitors climbing up to the temple for their offerings to the goddess. All the donations and charities created by the temple are under the control of a local trust named as the Chaturshringi Devasthan Trust. Disciplined and devoted followers are believed to get their wishes fulfilled upon worshipping the goddess.
The story behind the creation of the actual shrine of goddess Chaturshringi was a significant one. It describes about a wealthy and prosperous man named Durlabhsheth Pitambardas Mahajan who was a merchant by profession. He was an ardent follower of goddess Chatushringi. He had visited each and every temple of goddess Chaturshringi. However, during his elderly period it was unable for him to travel more places of the goddess for which he was hugely upset.
After some days the goddess herself visits him in his dream at night. She suggested him that if he can't travel to her, she will travel to him and resides in a place nearer to him. By saying that, she addressed him about a place at a mountain situating in the north-western region of Pune to travel there and excavate that place. Hence, according to the goddess words he travelled to that exact location and what he found after digging there was just a phenomenon for him. He found a naturally made deity of goddess Chaturshringi. He was so surprised about this incident that he decided to erect a temple of that goddess at that exact place where the idol was found and place the idol inside the temple. Thus, within a short period of time the temple was brought up and from then people started worshipping the goddess Chaturshringi with full dedication.
The temple of Chaturshringi has a basic similarity between its name and its location. The temple is located in a mountain having four different peaks. For this reason the temple is called as Chaturshringi (as "Chatur" means four). The temple is designed in the famous style of West-Indian architecture.
