Information on Viceregal Lodge (Shimla, Himachal Pradesh) - History & Architecture

The Viceregal Lodge, which is also known as the Rashtrapati Niwas is located in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The palace is deemed to be quite near to the observatory hills of the beautiful hill station i.e. Shimla. Over the year, the monument has witnessed the rule of both the British and the Indian rulers among others.

Viceregal Lodge Architecture

Architecturally, the monument was built primarily following the Jacobethan style of architecture during the reign of the viceroy of britiaash India Lord Dufferin. Jacobethan style of architecture mainly holds resemblance with the style of the British constructor which was most popular in England during the year 1800s. This particular style of architecture also holds relevance with the Gothic approach. It is one of the few monument in India that are built with the Jacobethan style. In terms of size the monument is seen as quite a big structure. It was designed by the architect from Public Works Department named Mr. Henry Irvine. The entry gate of the monument falls in the southern end which directly leads to the big reception hall within the palace. There is a magnificent fireplace within the hall which was used by the royal family of Lord Dufferin. Overall the monument is a six storey structure which used bricks and stones in an extensive manner. The drawing room as well as ballroom of the palace which were carved mainly with teak wood are among the additional features of the palace. Each of the storey of the monument has lawns where one can see the beautiful panoramic view of Beautiful nature.

Viceregal Lodge History

Historically, the monument has a heritage of more than 200 years associated with it. Notably, the monument was once used as the residence of the viceroy of the British rule. It splendor and magnificence is considered to be one of the greatest in the history of India. The monument was primarily built in the year 1888. However, the constructed stated in the years 1880 and took 8 long years for its completion. Lord Dufferin who was the viceroy during the rule of British in India, occupied the palace for residence in the year 1888 on the 23rd day of July. Though Indians have little history associated with the monument, the British has used the palace in an extensive manner. Only few of the historical leaders of India has association with the palace including S.Radhakrishnan among the most important. In the present day scenario, the ownership of the palace was provide to the Ministry of Education in India which further utilized the palace as a place for Indian Institute of Advanced Study. Though most parts of the monument id used for educational purpose, some of its areas are occupied by the state government of Himachal Pradesh for conducting administrative activities. The grandeur of the palace has remained intact over the years owing to its extensive use by the various sections of the state.

With regard to tourism, the place is deemed to be one of the most visited places in Himachal Pradesh. Its unique architectural design which belongs to England is one of its kind in India. This aspect will also attract a large number of visitors throughout the year. Some of the additional features of the palace such as the hot and cold running water amenities, tennis court within the interior and the big garden in front of the palace is also cherished by the visitors.
