The Palakkad fort is constructed in the square shape, with huge and gigantic walls and with the strong fortresses around all the corners of the fort and also in the middle or center. The fort entrance during the early times used to be through the draw bridge, which later was come into being as the permanent one, after it was replaced. The huge ground is located at the center of the fort and used to serve as the stable for the Tipu Sultan's elephants and steeds which were the armies, in the battle field. The temple of Lord Hanuman is also built in the dedication of Hanuman which is to be found inside the fort and along with it there is also an open air auditorium called Rappadi, a sub-jail and the marty's column which is also inside the premises of the fort.
The Palakkad Fort or the Tipu Sultan fort, is located in the small district of Kerala, and to believe it has remained there since ages, and is one of the ancient forts. The history behind the old fort before reconstruction is a myth. As per the historian's records, it is believed the King of Palakkad Achahan was actually the tributary of the Zamorin. During the beginning of 18th century he detached himself of the Zamorin and became independent. However the Zamorin, attacked his and he came to Haider Ali, seeking for some help. Looking at the opportunity Haider Ali seized to achieve ownership of the strategically significant location, which is Palghat and politically he conquered over Palakkad and the Palakkad fort. Since that time the fort has been under the supremacy of the Mysore Sultan or the British.
The fort was at foremost conquered by Colonel Wood in 1768, at the time of his incursion on Haider Ali's bastion, but somehow after few months Haider Ali took over it again. The fortress kept on being ping-pong between Haider Ali and Colonel Wood, as Colonel Wood, recaptured it in 1783. Between the invasion between Haider Ali and Colonel Wood, the fort later came under the supremacy of Zamorin troops. In conclusion the British captured it under Colonel Stuart in 1790. The fort was renovated and was used as the foundation of the operation, in this part. The fort was consecutively garrisoned till the middle of the 19th century. In the later 12th century the fort was transformed into the Taluk office.
