Architecturally, the tank is a masterpiece in its own manner. Despite of the fact that the tank is more than 200 years of age, one cannot visually understand that it was made in the absence of any technological support. The tank has a depth of around 64 feet which is quite deep indeed. It will be vital to mention that the embankment of the tank is artificial and raised the surface of water to height of around 40 feet from the surrounding plain. Another interesting architectural feature of the tank is that it was built in a single night. The level of water within the tank never go down and remain stable throughout the year. Another aspect that depicts the architectural skill of the tank is that water level in it remains higher than that of water level in the entire Assam. The three Dols that are situated within the banks of the tank includes Siva Dol, Devi Dol and Bisnu Dol. These are the three temple of lord Shiva, lord Vishnu and Maa Durga.
Historically the structure is one of the oldest in Assam. It is the most remarkable landscape in the town along with the Namdang Bridge. The tank was built in the year 1734 by Queen Ambika who also played a major role while the tank was dugged. The tank was built by the queen in memory of her husband Sri Swargadeo Sivasingha. It is quite important to state the city i.e. Sivsagar has got its name from the tank itself which further depicts the importance of the structure. Another notable historic aspects of the tank is that it had been the second largest man made tank in the whole region of Assam just after the famous Joysagar tank. The tank is quite large in terms of its size. It has been noted that the tank had been built in an area of around 130 acres which is among the largest in Assam. It is also among most important creations of the Ahom rulers in between their 600 years of rule in the place. The largest tank which is called the Joysagar Tank was built in an area of 318 acres which is again one of its kind in the Assam and the entire India. Overall, it can be ascertained that the tank has a rich historical heritage associated with it.
With regard to tourism, the tank has been one of the major attractions of the tourism sector of Assam owing to its historical importance and special architectural characteristic. The three temples that are situated in front of the tank and the surrounding is also deemed to attract a large group of religious tourists throughout the year. One extraordinary fact about the tank is that t is its water level will remain as it is irrespective of the level of rain that occur in the surrounding area throughout the year. Therefor it is quite evident that the place has the potential to attract large visitors which includes both local and international tourists that boost the overall tourism sector.
