The fortification of Sisupalgarh represents the architectural beauty of the historical monuments of India. A strong wall was brought up about 2000 years ago to defend the fort from outside invaders. The total area of this huge wall is about 1200x1160 metres and it had an elevation of 12 metres in length. Other than that, many tall towers, old structures and beautifully designed crafts are also witnessed in this site. The fortress is also divided by two massive gates having an altitude of 90 metres. Many articles and documents relating to the ancient period were found during the excavations which was a huge achievement for the archaeological department of India. A lots of jewellery made of clay such as finger rings, ear rings, necklaces, bangles of that period were excavated from this site. It also includes many stone pillars, clay pottery, ornaments made of terracotta and sculptures made of clay.
At present the ruined condition of this fort is developing day by day after the Archaeological Survey of India took the initiative to preserve this cultural heritage site of India.
There is not much to be said about the historical significance of Sisupalgarh Fort and the city which was more ancient than it was thought. The information and articles related to this fort were derived only through various excavations. The total perimeter of this massive structure and its surroundings is about 4.8 kilometres. The first known excavation was conducted under the guidance of Karuna Sagar Behara way back in 1940. He was a famous historian at that time. A huge defense settlement relating to the Mauryan dynasty was found while excavating at that time. Also coins made of gold and other historical materials relating to that period were found which was later lost due to lack of security. The next excavation was done in 1948 under the command of B. B. Lal. Though, it was the second excavation completed here still in the history books it was named as the as the first excavation of this place. Through excavations the total population of the city at that time was also known. A maximum of 25000 citizens resided here at that time though it was just one part which was excavated at that time.
The fort is well connected as the railway station and airport is located close to it. People having fascination for historical and architectural beauty visit this fort.
