Pandalam palace is positioned near to the river bank of Achankovil in the city of Pandalamin Kerala. The place as well as the fort has major connections with Lord Ayyappa and Sabarimala. The royal family of Pandalam was used to reside in the palace during the time of 900 AD.

Pandalam Palace Architecture

The palace has followed the local Kerela architectural style which can mainly be seen in the use of bamboos and mud while constructing the palace. There is a temple at the rear end of the palace known as Valiyakoikkal Dharma Sastha temple which is known to be built by Pandalam rulers organizes a special puja in the 28th day of January every year where ornaments used by the royal family are presented. The ceremonial sword of the kings of Pandalam are also presented during this puja. However, with regard to public viewing the ornaments and sword are displayed for darshan for all Wednesdays and Saturdays in the month of November. The size of the palace is quite small as compared to other palaces in and around this place. The palace is a two storey structure made mainly of mud, bamboos and stone. This is a small garden in front of the palace which further adds to its overall beauty. The roof of the palace is made of esbestor and hay which provide it with the local Kerela look. The exterior walls of the palace is tinted with white color while some parts depicts a red texture.

Pandalam Palace History

Though most part of the building has been deteriorated over the years, there are some remains which depicts its rich history and archeological importance. Only two part of the palace complex is still being preserved by the local authority. There are two temple within the palace area which includes Valiyakoikkal Temple and Kaipuzha Temple that are still being used to worship by the people in the surrounding area. The palace was constructed in the year 903 AD by the Pandya kings of Madurai. However, owing to the threat pose by other rulers during the time, the Pandya family fled from the place and the palace. The palace was later acquired by the ruler of Venad later named as Travancore and established in a more extensive manner. The Pandalam family and the ruler of Venad had a friendly relationship. Later in 1194 AD the Pandalam rulers took over the palace. The palace is constructed within an area of 1,000 square miles. This area not only include the palace but also include the mountains and forest. There are also churches and mosques built in front of the palace further adding to its historical significance.

The darshan where the sword and ornaments of the raja are displayed for the public attracts a large number of people all over the state, country and the world especially including the pilgrimage. The appropriate weather of the place throughout the year also makes it suitable place especially for the international tourists. Furthermore, the nearby attractions of the place especially including the lake adds to the wonderful experience of the tourist.
