Situated in Satari district of North Goa, Nanuz Fort is regarded as a key fortress of Goa's architectural history. The fort is created on the basis of Indo-Portuguese architectural style, i.e. combination of India, Portuguese and Mughal architecture. Since Portuguese people ruled this place for above four centuries, Portuguese architecture is highly prominent in almost every fortress of Goa including Nanuz Fort. The fortress is characterised by a large lake in one side. According to history, the fort is was bounded by walls along with watchtowers in various sides. However, at present one can only observe the leftovers of the walls, which stands about 6 feet tall. There is also a leftover of big pillar, made up of brick work with inscription within it. Apart from that there is a large grassland which surrounds Nanuz Fort.
With no surprise, it is acknowledged that Nanuz Fort at present times remains nothing of what it had in ancient times. Only the remnants of the original Nanuz Fort can be viewable from the location. The reason is that Nanuz Fort has undergone significant battle strikes between various rulers such as Mughal, Portuguese and Maratha etc. to a cite few. As a result, most of the structures of the fort was destroyed by the assault from opposing forces. Furthermore, no specific reconstruction or restoration activities are conducted by the government, owing to which Nanuz Fort has come to its ruin.
Nanuz Fort has significant history with respect to its rulers. Nanuz Fort has changed the ownership multiple times throughout its existence as a defence point. The fort was basically designed for military purposes. After its creation by Shivaji, Nanuz Fort was conquered by Portuguese ruler, Diapaji Rane. He transformed the fort into a military base. During his sovereignty, Diapaji Rane and his forces invaded various villages of Bardez and Tiswadi and he used Nanuz Fort as headquarter. In due course, Nanuz Fort was captured by the forces of Quepem. After some years, the forces of Panami garrisons had taken control over the authority of Nanuz Fort from Quepem forces. All these incidences regarding the takeovers of Nanuz Fort happened throughout the timeframe of primary revolutions of Goa's History. It's quite interesting to know about the historical features of this fort as it has many features that helps in shaping the history of Goa.
With all historical events that are related with Nanuz Fort, it is considered as great place for tourism particularly for history lovers. The fort itself stands as a key example of revolt in Goa where multiple rulers were engaged in taking over the authority of he fort. As a result, the Nanuz Fort has become a ruined place. Still, it has certain natural beauty along with leftover structures which can be worth visit by the travellers. Nanuz Fort dates back to the construction pattern that was used during 17th century. Thus, it is attracted by many visitors of Goa and is a great tourist spot.
