Information on Nabha House (Kurukshetra, Haryana) - History & Architecture

Nabha House located near Kurukshetra is a pilgrim house for those who come to visit the ancient holy land of Vedic Era of India where the Great Battle of Mahabharata took place in this part known in those days itself as the Kurukshetra. This is the ancient holy place for the Hindus. Here many Hindu temples found here which are very old. The specialty of this place is the Sannihit Sarovar, which is a sacred lake for the Hindu Religious peoples on eclipse days. Since many religious peoples come here as pilgrims. The Nabha of Punjab built this Pilgrim Rest House in the 19th century.

Nabha House Architecture

Nabha House is built as Guest House, in the notion of accommodating many numbers of peoples at a time. This land mass is 235 meter above the sea level. This guest house was placed on the opposite towards the holly Sannihit Sarovar lake area in the Kurukshetra town. This is a three storied structure built of red sand stone, woods, glasses, clay tiles, granite stone and lime stones as bonding material. This structure was supposed to be completely made in Hindu architectural form, since this guest house is for Hindu pilgrimages, this notion was always kept in their design. But the builder of this building is a Rajput architect, who gave few finishing touches in the Rajputana style which is also similar to the Hindu model. This building has a large pillared entrance gate; it is stuffed with two round domes. The entire edifice is standing on a raised big platform, which made it look elegant. There are pillared large verandahs on its ground floors. All these pillars are well curved in the Hindu designs. It had many windows with parapets; these windows are presently fitted with glass frames. There are also arched windows in the central building which adds a special beauty to this edifice. On its roof it had got a well carved obelisk tower surrounded with other four pillared domed towers, which are the best designs to look. It had got very good tiled terrace to view the Kurukshetra surroundings. It does have a Brahma temple on its top. It is a 15 ft high statue built in the Nava Rathna model. On the inside there are spacious living rooms, halls and verandahs, which make it the best rest place for pilgrims who come here.

Nabha House History

Nabha House in Kurukhetra was built by Hira Singh, who was the Nabha Ruler of this area. They were the decedents of the Bhatti's of Rajasthan who were the Rajput clans in the 16th century AD. They came to this Punjab province by marriage relation with this region. This area was with the Muglas Empire in that time. It also saw the rising of Sikhs as powerful rulers in those days. Hira Singh was an eminent ruler among the Nabha's. He gave more grandness to art and cultural. This place was more important to him and built many Hindu structures here. The initial period of this Nabha House was once used by high class peoples who comes here as pilgrims. Later it was to common peoples. On the eve of Eclipse days, many Hindus gather to take a dip or bath at this Sannihit Sarovar. This was a holy belief of the Hindus that it gets away of all evils and make them pure if they took a dip in this lake on the eclipse occurrence day.

Nabha House is a religious and cultural heritage site. It will be bliss to visit this Vedic land once considered to flourish a majestic civilization, which was the base for Hinduism in India. The name Bharath, which is now India, came from its ruler name King Bharath. Now this is under the list of protected monument under India Government.
