The fort was mainly built following the Portuguese style of architecture. However, in the later scenario, it was redesigned by the Maratha rulers owing to which some parts of the fort also depicts the Hindu style of architecture. Inside the fort there are magazines, chapel and quarters for the guards which were mainly placed during the rule of the Portuguese in the fort. Another important feature of the fort that adds to its beauty is the fountain that is located in the center of the fort. These fountains are still in function in the present day context. The fountains which included Fonte de Malabar and Fonte de Santo Ignacio were believed to be taken from gold mine and Sulphur mine respectively. There are also prisons inside the fort which were used by both the Portuguese and the Maratha rulers to keep the enemies or intruders. The entrance gate of the fort has its own attraction as has been carved with names of Dom Fransisco Da Gama as well as King Dom Fillip in which rule the fort was made. The fort was mainly made of brick and mud and even though it is, its architectural beauty is well praised even today.
The monument i.e. Mormugao Fort is located in the Mormugao region which is mainly located in the southern part of Goa. It was roughly in the year 1624 that the fort was built by the Portuguese. They intend to have eternal supremacy within the Mormugao region by defeating the enemies who stands against them. In terms of the geographical calculation the fort is located in the north western part of the state of Goa. The fort was also built by the Portuguese rulers with the intention to protect the territorial waters of the region which they can use for their own benefit. Furthermore, it has also been noted that by the year 1703, the viceroy of the Portuguese rule use the fort as his residence for quite a long till the late 17th century. However, in the later scenario, the Portuguese were defeated by the Marathas with which the possession of the fort went to the Maratha rulers during the early 18th century. The fort covers more than six miles in terms of its circumference. The place is also full of natural plants which further makes the environment soothing for the visitors. The fort has been well managed and preserved over the years.
With regard to tourism, the place is deemed to be one of the most visited historical place in goa. The Varca beach is located quite near to the fort where fishing boat are found in large numbers. This can provide a great sight for the visitors especially in the summer season. Again the position of the fort is also quite near to the city area which makes it convenient for the visitors to reach the place. There is also a garden in the fort which further enhance its natural beauty. It also assures a soothing experience for the visitors. Overall it can easily affirmed that the fort can provide a never before experience to the tourists throughout.
