Information on Maritime Museum (Ernakulam, Kerala) - History & Architecture

Maritime Museum is located in K.J. Herschel Road, Veli, Fort Kochi, Ernakulum District of Kerala State in India. This museum depicts the Indian history in its water ways from day back to the Indus valley civilization to the present days of modern equipped Indian Navy. This is in the campus of INS Dronacharya, which is the naval base of Fort Kochi. This museum was arranged to gain knowledge of the Indian Maritime in various periods and encourage the youths to join the Indian Naval Services. It is a great tourist spot to know about the Vasco da Gama's expedition to India from Europe.

Maritime Museum Architecture

Maritime Museum totally reflects the construction of the ships from the Indus valley Civilization (2600 BC) to the present days. It has many models ship building process kept here. There are also drawings in colorful forms to show the sea and its functions. There are medieval period telescopes kept here by which many explorers traveled around the world to find new lands. Many ancient maps of the world sketched by these explorers are put on display. The man made compasses of the medieval period, which was brought in India by the Europeans are still preserved and kept. The step by step architecture of ship buildings are displayed in toy models, this includes the ancient ships to the latest warfare ships. It has the vast collection of the maritime heroes like the Vasco da Gama and the Indian sailor Kunjali Marakkar's ship models, the materials used in ships, which are considered to be very antique. It also displays the warfare accepts like the archeries, cannons and the latest machine guns. There are also many instruments of measures used by the explorers on their way to sea are here. These antiquities are placed in very good ambience. All of its paintings, models and display articles are supported with beam of lights to make it more colorful.

Maritime Museum displays the Indian heritage in its water ways. From 1620, it got its own Navy and the present fare more advanced one and ranks in the 10th place in the world.
