Haathi Mahal is located at Mandu Town, Dhar District of Madhya Pradesh State in India. Hathi Mahal is also acknowledged as 'The Elephant Palace' in the tourist destination list of Madhya Pradesh. This is erstwhile region of the Malwa's, which are popular for its fortification and huge palaces. Nearly 100 Kms of stretch is full of ancient structures, there for it is known as the rock City. These are protected monument of India and a very significant tourist destination. This Elephant Palace is also a mega rock structure like a giant elephant.

Haathi Mahal Architecture

Haathi Mahal was names since it has many pillars in large size; hence this structure was named Hathi or the Elephant in English. This palace acquires the indo Islamic architectural style in its construction. The geographical elevation of this area is 600 meters above the sea level. It is a huge stone structure, since the rock cuts are also very large in size. This palace was built for a luxury living purpose and later converted in to a mausoleum. There are few tombs built inside and outside of this palace area. A mosque is also there, which is built uniquely in Islamic pattern. The remarkable part of this palace is it's huge round dome in its centre of this Elephant Palace. It is also said that, the large pillars found inside the palace is the only ways to support such a huge dome on this structure. On the inside of this palace, there are very large windows and door. This palace is constructed in such a way that it brings cool air all over the inner palace spheres. This Mahal has a boastful courtyard located centrally inside this palace. There are spacious halls and rooms built inside this palace. It also got few open areas with lovely gardens plunged in. the terrace in which the dome is occupied has a very unique tiles laid over there. It floors are also having well polished tiles. Thus it architectural importance is well recognized and more of all, its artistic skills of the artisans are simply outstanding.

Haathi Mahal History

Haathi Mahal located at Mandu Village is also known as the Mandavagad. This place is known in the history from 11th century AD. The Taranga Kingdom initially ruled this region, which became a historical place with rich art and culture. This palace is believed to be built around the 16th century AD. From the 12th century to the colonial era, this palace was under invasion and aggression by Khilji Rulers and by the Mughal Rulers. The Taranga rulers occupied this palace for few years only. In the 18th century it became a traveler's pavilion. Now it is a mausoleum for Darya Khan, his tomb lies in this palace. His tomb is in a glossy finish in red color.
