Information on Gaitore (Jaipur, Rajasthan) - History & Architecture

Gaitore is a cenotaph berth for the Rajasthan royal families. It is on the way to 'Amar' a 15 km distance from Jaipur city, Rajasthan, India. This is an historical place to visit. It is a crematorium and a resting place of many Rajput Kings. Here 'Maharaja Jai Singh II' is laid to rest, and his tomb is an esthetic work on marbles. The crematorium place looks like a huge temple from outside. Inside it has tombs and cenotaph designed in Hindu and Islamic styles. One must come here to see the richness spent on death, for their-own berths in a crematorium. Jaipur is the state capital of Rajasthan. It has airport, railway station and road ways well connected to the Mumbai Delhi route. Total distance from New Delhi is 264 km. From the nearest tourist spot of Udaipur it is 328 km and from Mumbai it's about 1185 km. These can be accessed 24 hours daily.

Gaitore Architecture

Gaitore is built in Indo Mughal architectural pattern. Immense care is taken for burial and cremation places here. Since, the king has his choice of his tomb to be made. This was built on a progression of time. There ware thousands on artisans contributed to its creations. The materials used were pure marbles, red and white sand stones. Since, kings had their preference of art works on their proposed tombs; these were designed according to their wishes. The tomb crafts were usually matched with those times of art works. Many of the tombs are found in the Islamic style and designs. There are also a large scale painting works done on the tomb walls, which are still brighter to see. From a long distance this will look like a vast traditional Hindu temple with doomed pavilions.

Gaitore History

Gaitore in Hindi mean 'Gaya' and 'Thore' .i.e. the place for the bidden souls. This cenotaph is of historical importance since the famous kings like Maharaja Ram Singh, Maharaja Madho Singh, Maharaja Jai Singh I and Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II were laid to rest here after their death. This shows the royal and cultural richness of the Rajput clans. Even on their deaths they were pre calculated and made it in posh and royal resting place. All most all of the Rajput clans were either cremated or buried here except the king 'Maharaja Sawai Ishwari Singh' who was not buried in their royal crematorium. It was noted by the historians that the kings were the second god for the commoners and they do give respects and honors by coming to their tombs and offer floral tributes and pray from them. The same tribute cultural was observed in the Mughal kingdom and it was a copy of its culture.

Gaitore Tourism Importance

Gaitore cenotaphs, is a tourist attraction place in Jaipur for its vast artistic carving work on marbles and on great structures. It looks like a holly ancient temple. Here the Rajasthan tourism development board has joint ventures with private hotels to promote tourism of world standard; it has taken all necessary facilities to fulfill the need of tourist. Here one can find a small hotel to heritage luxury hotels. There are registered guides and travel agents to make your tripe a great experience. Rajasthan is known for its royal customs. The best season to visit here is from August to February, since its climatic conditions are too hot in summer and too cold in winter. It is always advisable to come here in the autumn and winter seasons. The Gaitore is open to public from Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 5:30 pm. Entry fee is there which starts from Rs.30 according to age and nationality.
