Haathi Mahal was names since it has many pillars in large size; hence this structure was named Hathi or the Elephant in English. This palace acquires the indo Islamic architectural style in its construction. The geographical elevation of this area is 600 meters above the sea level. It is a huge stone structure, since the rock cuts are also very large in size. This palace was built for a luxury living purpose and later converted in to a mausoleum. There are few tombs built inside and outside of this palace area.
The walls of Hindola Mahal are inordinately much thick and more slope like those of a British castle. The actual slope of nearly 77 degrees largely gives a swinging direct appearance to the building structure, hence the name was given. The entire master plan of the building structure is 'T' shaped. According to the historians, upright stem actually being the primary hall that was initially built and later the cross bar hall is a transverse portion which was added. The building structure was supposed probably to have the zenana place.
