David Hall was built around 1690's by the Dutch Imperialist in Malabar province. This palace was built for official purpose and accommodated many Dutch officials and military personals who visited Cochin from the period of 18th century onwards. This bungalow was totally built in the Dutch model, which attracted many people's going around by. The entire edifice is built of granite stones, teak woods and lime stones. It has glassed windows, wooden carved doors, wooden roofs and all Dutch interiors brought from the Holland. It is a unique master piece of Dutch architecture in India. A three foot mini wall was built around the Bungalow that adds a special beauty to the building. The elegantly built David hall was renovated and the process for a complete renovation took 19 years to craft the elegant look and the more importance was given to restore the beauty of the building that was once the glory of the past. Even today, we can see splendid and architecturally beautiful Dutch architecture, while we are here to visit David Hall.
David Hall was titled in the name of a Jew Trader in the Dutch East India Company named David Koder. It had a vast garden with very old trees, which gave a cool shade throughout the year. This building was renovated by the archeological department of India in the recent times and a portion of the Bungalow was given to a hotel group to promote tourism here. It is now a modern cafeteria. A special art gallery is there for the Dutch promotions in Kerala. It is a social and cultural centre that promotes various art forms from here to all interested peoples. David hall is an important land mark in the Fort Kochi area. Its top was recently renovated in to a totally Dutch pattern; previously it had clay tiles on its roofs.
David Hall is a place of tourist importance. It is an art gallery one must visit here to know the glory of the colonial period.
