Alang Fort is an ancient fort built on the Western Ghats. Its architect and builder of this fort are unknown to historians. Since this fort has very less mentioned in the history of Maharashtra. According to the stone carvings crypts, it is believed to be built by the local tribal groups who lived in the Ambewadi villages. This is a stone marvel. This fort doesn't look like a fort on these 1372 meters above the sea level Hills. Since this fort is built with the same rocks found on these hill ranges. It has occupied top plains of these hill areas. The main walls are built along the ridges, this look as if it were the part of mountain rocks. A high raised rampart with a 30 meter thickness is built in a curved shape along its hill tops. This shape is natural and laid according the frontiers of the plain area found here. This fort has very steep slopes and one of its sides has got a vertical slop up to 100 meters. This is also connected by many hillocks surrounded with two more forts making this hills look unique. It seems this fort was totally built for civilians to hide in times for wars. Since, there are no better ways to reach here. It was only known to those peoples who lived here in those times. It is believed that it had got a tunnel rout to reach its half way distance. But these passages are not yet found. It is the highest rain receiving areas in the Western Ghats and is always covered with thick vegetations. There are many caves found here, these are the living areas inside this fort. There are water pits found here with ample waters. These pits may be the result of mining of rocks to build its walls. There are many inscriptions found in the Sanskrit and Palli languages. These are ancient scripts. There are well built pillared towers here which are built on a single stones. The marks of foundations stones now seen reflects this place was under conflicts. Since few complexes are in ruined stage.
Alang Fort was once used by the tribal peoples of these areas. It is said in history of the British records that the Marathas and Mughals occupied these fort and kept as a watch towers in the medieval period. Since it height was 4852 ft, it was the best place to look out any invaders coming in side this province. Their greater height is the only importance and it's in accessibility made it a less conflicted fort in the hilltop fort history of India. According to British records many Marathi tribes were living here in times of crises and took this for as a safer place to live. The British do gave any special interest in this fort and was kept as adventure area for its troops and officials.
Alang Fort is a very rare fort to see in its natural state, this fort is the only lesser accessed forts in India. Now this fort and its surrounding place are of trekking importance. This fort is the best place for photographers, mountaineers, historians and tourists.
