Information of Bangla Sahib Gurudwara, New Delhi

It can be mentioned that Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is considered as one of the most famous places of worship in the city of Delhi. This place is found to be bundled with people during holidays. People from all caste and creed are free to visit the temple. The place has developed into a center of pilgrimage for numerous people everyday. The temple is situated near the Cannaught Palace Market in New Delhi. The Gurudwara has been constructed over a site where Guru Harikishen Dev, the eight Gurus of the Sikhs resided. It is also said that the sixth Guru named Sri Hargobind Sahib also resided in this place after he was released from the Gwalior Fort.

Bangla Sahib Gurudwara Religious Importance

This Gurudwara is considered as a significant historical as well as religious place in India. Prior to entering the shrine, one need to take a holy dip in the pond that has been constructed within the Gurudwara compound itself. The devotees are permitted to enter into the complex bare-footed by covering their head. They are supposed to wear conservative clothes that cover their legs and shoulders.

Bangla Sahib Gurudwara Mythologies and Legends

As per the legend associated with the shrine, it is said that there was a clash regarding the seat of Guru Sahib. In such occasion, Ram Rai who was the brother of Harkishen asked for assistance from Aurangzeb. Guru Harkishen was called by Aurungzeb to Delhi and was entertained in a royal manner by Mirza Raja Jai Singh, Diwan Dargah Mull, Bhai Gurditta Ji, Bhai Mati Das Ji and the mother of the Guruji in their own palace. With the pace of time, this place was converted into a Gurudwara in the memory of Guru Sahib and is well known as Gurudwara Bangla Sahib. This place also had the tribute of hosting the Guru Sri Hargobind Sahib when he arrived in Delhi. There is a bungalow in Amber that has been owned by Raja Jai Singh which has been converted into Gurudwara Bangla Sahib. Sri Harkishan visited this place as a guest of Raja Jai Singh. This Guru died on October 6, 1661 AD. The shrine tends to entail the story of Baba Ram Rai, who was the brother of Guruji, tried in futile to influence the Sikhs residing in Delhi and Punjab. The Rajput chief namely Raja Jai Singh is said to have taken the responsibility of the entire temple. In Delhi the great Guru had worked for the betterment of the people and also assisted them suffering from cholera and small pox. The poor people were offered with medicines, clothes and food by the Guruji. A small tank was developed by Raja Jai Singh inside the Gurudwara. At present this water is used to cure various diseases and problems.

Bangla Sahib Gurudwara Architecture

The complex has a big ground that consists of the kitchen, pond, school as well as art gallery. There is a big museum, library as well as a hospital as well. There is a housing complex namely 'yatri niwas' as well as a multi-level parking space as well. Clean and huge toilet complex tends to add to the convenience of the tourists visiting the place. The space at the back entrance of the temple is also being constructed in order to offer a better view of the temple from the roadside. A big tank of 225*235 ft consisting of 18 ft Parikarma as well as 12 ft wide verandah in the three sides of the tank has been made with the assistance of the people.
