Yamuna River is the longest river of India which takes birth from the womb of 'Yamunotri'. The river crosses several numbers of states of India. The India is known for its agriculture and cultivation of various kinds of vegetations, people might be surprised to know that Yamuna River plays the vital role for the agriculture of India as it fertilizes the land and helps the soil to retain the moisture of the soil this type of soil is called 'Alluvial Soil'. This soil is appropriate for the growth of rice and wheat. It is not only important for the agricultural point of view but it is also important in religious point of view. River Yamuna is worshiped and prayed since ages. According to the mythology Yamuna is considered to be the daughter of Lord Sun (Surya) and sister of Yama, who is the God of death, other name of Yamuna is 'Yami' so it is said that once in the life time of Hindu one has to take a 'Holy Dip' in this river Yamuna. By this it is considered that the pain of death is washed away in this river of Yami.
By the epic of Krishna it is said that when Lord Krishna was born his maternal uncle tried to kill all his nephews as it was predicted that the eight son of Vasudeva (Krishna's father) will be his reason of death (Kaal) for him. The night Krishna was born Vasudeva took the baby in a small basket across the river Yamuna, then the river turbulent was cut down and a path was made for him. Mathura, where Lord Krishna was brought up was near the bank of Yamuna, he used to play with Gopi near the river.
Yamuna has always played a significant role in the ancient India. This festival is to give the honour and tribute to this great holy river.
