Sant Tukaram Jayanthi is celebrated every year on 12 March. It is celebrated because Sant Tukaram abode to heaven that day. He lived between 1608 to 1649 he was a renowned person in the field of Marathi language and poetry. His contribution to the Marathi is remarkable. His spiritual songs and innumerable support to Marathi is unforgettable. His contribution in the Marathi Literature is often compared with Shakespeare in English. About 4500 Bhangs or known as Gatha defines his collections and his contribution. Most of the famous Indian poems Like Namdev, Janabai and Eknath, Tukaram wrote in archaic Marathi is among his abhangas or 'unbroken' hymns.

Sant Tukaram was born in a small village near Pune named Dehu. He did all that a divine soul would have done to attain the Moksha. It is believed that Lord Vithoba resided there, as a temple of Lord Vithoba is near the bank of river Indrayani. Tukaram ancestor used to reside there and follow him. Tukaram was born in Kshatriya family a pious family, they had farm land and money was engaged in business. But unfortunately Tukaram got orphaned and had a huge loss in business. He left the world of desires and sins, and decided to dedicate his life in the field of God, to understand the stories of God and his power. The turning point in hisslife occurred as he met Namdev in dream and Lord Vitthal in hiself, they gave him a path of devotion and direction to submit his life in the name of God and his power.

Tukaram's songs and poems elaborates the deepness of his devotion in God and mankind in all. He was deeply influenced by the Purans, lives of Sants, admiring descriptions of Pandharpur. He taught his disciple to quit clothes of tradition as he considered it to be an obstruction in Sadhana. He refused the jewels and diamonds offered by Shivaji Maharaj himself. He believed that that the true feeling of human beings lies in his heart not in the rituals and the orthodox feeling but within. He is considered as one of the Guru in Sikh and his poems and songs are there in Guru Granth Sahib.

Tukaram is remember by his contribution by writing abhangas in which he dealt with all relevant topics, but his poems never was at controversy or disliked by people as he always added 'Tuka Mahe' means Tuka says so he merely meant he said those words for the welfare of the people but accepting or not it is totally dependent on them. He used to say that these words are not his, but actually he was the tool for the God to convey his thoughts to the world.
