Rakhi Bandhan also known as Rakhi Purnima by the Indians is one of the biggest festivals celebrated annually without fail and is eagerly awaited by thousands of Indians for this day. The season usually falls during the month of the Hindu lunisolar calendar and so sometime the date changes but for sure the festival falls on the full moon day that is during the Shravan Poornima of the Shravan month of the Hindu lunisolar calendar. Today the festival is not only for the Hindu's alone but it is widely celebrated and known all over the world. First the festival was primarily observed by the Indians and some of the neighbouring countries like Mauritius, Nepal and some parts of Pakistan too observed this season in a grand way.
It is believe the practice of tying the sacred thread known as Rakhi started from the time of the Mughal emperor. According to the Islamic scholars believe it became popular from the time when Rani Karnavati the widow queen of Chittor sent Rakhi to her brother the Mughal emperor Humayun from then on the practice started and it became more meaningful when the brothers too presented gifts to their sisters as the part of the celebration. Today the festival is known as the season of vows and happiness.
Even during the olden days too this festival of Rakhi Bandhan was celebrated in a grant way and many took it as an auspicious season where you will find there are lots of written scripts and mentions about this festival even in the mythical and historical occurrences. Rabindranath Tagore also used this auspicious day as a potent tool for social change and according to him the tying of the thread and celebration is not only meant for the siblings alone but for all it can be used as a tool to enveloped permanent bond of love and friendship among humanity and so the festival is not only meant for the Hindus alone but it is meant for all.
