Prathamastami is the main festival celebrated in Orissa state, this festival is particularly celebrated here with great zeal and enthusiasm. This festival is celebrated for good life and prosperity. It is celebrated on the eight day (Asthami) of the month of Margashira (November- December) according to the Purnimanta calendar followed by the North India, which occurs on the eight day of Kartik. This festival is mainly celebrated for the goodwill of the eldest child of the house, who is offered a light lamp by the eldest female member of the family as an ovation along with long rituals and mantras are read during the festival.

On this festival the mother and the relatives do Aarathi of the eldest child in the family. For the rituals, Shashti Devi and the family deity worship the materials and the holy belongings are sends by the maternal relatives. During this festival irrespective of the sex the only eldest child is honoured and allowed to do all the ritual of this festival. The ritual involves the child is given with new clothes and makes him/her sit on a wooden pedestal (Pedha), then a earthen pot is kept in front of the child in which water is filled with a handful of paddy. In that pot a branch of mango and coconut is placed in it. All the ladies and the mother prays with full dedication for the safety and good health of their eldest child. To protect their child from all the evil mother prays to Goddess Sathi Devi in this festival. Before all this the all the elderly member of the family offer the cooked cuisine mainly Pitha and Khiri is offered to the Goddess Sathi Devi, then the light is lamped and the rituals related to the first-born of the family is proceeded. The first born is considered to be the bright and obedient child, it is said that the first born keep the tradition of the family and later the family responsibilities and burdens are taken by their shoulders. In a parent life the eldest son is very close to their heart as the first born makes the path of good life and success for their young brothers and sisters.

A special kind of cuisine is cooked on this day by the elder women of the family called 'Pitha' also called as 'Enduri', it is a kind of cake prepared by local people of Orissa. Other dishes like Haladi Patra Pitha, Khiri (sweet dishes) which is considered to be the auspicious food of the festival. Great devotions and belief can be observed by the people on this day.
