The tradition of celebrating mother's Day began around 20th century in the United States. It is not associated with the traditional customs of honouring mothers in different religions however it is loosely based on those same principles. The first celebration of Mother's Day was in the year 1908 by Anna Jarvis in America who organised a memorial for her mother on this day. After this day the tradition fastly caught up and became commercialised by 1920. Slowly it spread to other parts of the world as well and it became a common practice all over the world. People began to buy gifts for their mothers, take them out for treat, make her take a break from work and try to make all her wish come true. Even though the practice of honouring mothers existed in America during the 1870's and 80's it was never done at a national or international level. Only since 1920 it became commercialised and internationalised.
In countries where the practice of honouring mothers already existed people just modified some of their practices at par with the international practices, and some continued with the same old ways. In countries where no such practice existed they also borrowed the practice. In India Mother's day is celebrated every year on the second Sunday of May. In Indian culture and tradition mother is treated like god. Even though this festival is not celebrated religiously, but the place of mother in any Indian's life is not less than that of God. Hence they find it a suitable way to express their love and respect for their mothers. Indians worship their mothers on various occasions like Matri Puja (mother worship), Sarawasti Puja etc. But mother's day is also celebrated with lot of enthusiasm mostly in the urban areas to make mother's feel special. People do different things on this day depending on their personal choice and the like of their mothers.
