Mewar festival is one of the most colorful festivals of India where the non parallel destination displays the heritage and the tradition of the Rajasthani people. The festival is celebrated at the advent of the spring season in the state in the land of the lakes, Udaipur in Rajasthan. The festival is a time when the place becomes very much vibrant and the true Rajasthan culture is in full swing during this time. In the past Udaipur has been the governing place for the brave rulers from Mewar and hence the place is very much significant.
The festival also coincides with the famous Gangaur festival of the state and hence the state is immersed in the festive mood. The festival is a time when the women of Rajasthan when they get a chance to display their folk culture. The women can be seen clad in their colorful dresses and the men in their wonderful attractive turbans and proudly displaying their thick and long mustaches. Adding to the fever is the huge number of the shops that are packed with the traditional stuff and the beautiful antiques that are a mark of the kingly state. The festival is not just a point of the attraction of the local people but it also sees a large gather of the foreign tourists interested in the richness of the state.
During this festival the Hindu deities namely lord Shiva and his wife Parvati better known as Isar and Gangaur respectively are worshipped. The women dress the idols after which they are taken out with a procession into the streets. Lord shiva and godess Parvati are considered the ideal couple in the Hindu tradition and the women take keen interest in dressing the idols as each woman desires to have the husband as lord Shiva. After a tour into the different cities, finally the procession head to the Gangaur Ghat at Pichola Lake. Here the idols are transferred into the boats and rowed to the deeper part of the lake and then finally immersed in the water with the chanting of the prayers to the deity.
After the immersion ceremony is over it is followed by a the various programs as the folk dances, folks songs singing into the nights plenty of fun filed stage programs as puppet shows etc. Finally the festival culminates with a wonderful display of the fireworks.
