Like any other Hindu festival the so called the Hanuman Jayanti is also one of the major Hindu festivals of India. This festival is kept in commemoration of the birthday of the Hanuman who is considered as the Varana god by the Hindus. There is no exact date fixed for this festival and so different states kept the day in different dates however it should be during the month of Chaitra and is widely celebrated on the 15th day of the Shukla Paksha.

In Maharashtra this festival of Hanuman Jayanti is observed during the full moon day of the Hindu lunar month of Chaitra while some other celebrates on the fourteenth day. This variation of dates and day is because according to some religious almanacs his birthday fall on the fourteenth day in the dark fortnight of the month of Ashvin and some believes that he was born on the full moon night in the bright fortnight of Chaitra.

However for some states there is not much concern about the date and the day of celebration. The states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala are rather flexible and keep the celebration in the month of Margazhi which normally falls in between 15 Dec and 14 Jan. Unlike other states the people of Orissa keep the first day of Baisakha month which falls during the month of April in between 14 and 15 and celebrates as a New Year festival for all Oriyas.

Though the date and month of celebration varies from one state to other the form and pattern are rather quite similar and follows almost the same method. People gather in groups and trek to various Hanuman temples for worship and celebration. The Hindus believe him to be the symbol of strength and energy. There are numerous stories about the old legends of their Gods. The Mahabharata too speaks a lot about him. The writings and stories of the Hindus book tell that he is an ardent devotee of Lord Rama and so people worship him for his unflinching devotion to the god.
