Ganesh Chaturthi is a major festival of the state of Maharashtra in India in which the Hindu deity lord Ganesha is worshipped and plenty of Pandals are put around the state bearing the huge idols of lord Ganesha. The idols as big as 70 feet can be seen to be installed in the pandals during the ganesh Chathurathi. The people have also got the tradition of keeping the idols at their home and everywhere the words "Ganpati Bappa Moriya Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar yaa!" Meaning, "Oh Ganpati My Lord, return soon next year!". It is celebrate as the birth of Lord Ganesha, who according to the Hindu mythology is known to be the god of wisdom and prosperity. The celebrations usually lasts for about five, seven or 10 days at the most. Not only Maharashtra but almost all of the north India celebrates this festival with lot of vigor and enthusiasm.

The first day of the 10 day celebration is called the Bhadrapad Shudh Chaturthi and the last or the tenth day is known as the Ananta Chaturdashi. These two dates are the most important days of the festival as on the first day lord Ganesha's idol is placed in the Pandals with the proper rites and the rituals and with the chanting of the hymns from the rig veda, ganapati atharva veda, the Ganesh stotra etc. and the final day the idols taken out of the Pandals and after travelling it across the city they are immersed in the waters of the rivers with proper rituals and with a the words of asking him to come back again as he came this year and brought the people plenty of wisdom and the prosperity.

Lord Ganesha has been known to be the god who should always be worshipped first before starting any new business, work or even the worshipping of any other god. during this time a lot of fairs and competitions are held all over the states celebrating the festivals and along with this a number of blood donation camps, eye donation camps, free food distribution in the name of parshads and much more charitable and social welfare works are done during this time. Lord Ganesha is also called the "Vighna harta" or "the destroyer of obstacles" and the "Buddhi Pradaayaka" or "the giver of intelligence". So for students the festival provides blessings of the Lord Ganesha to illume their minds with intelligence.
