The bond of brotherly-sisterly love, care and concern is gloried in these two festivals. In Raksha Bandhan the brother shows affirmation to his sister vowing to protect her throughout his life while Bhai Dooj is celebration made by the sister to show her love, concern and well-being for her brothers. The significant meaning of these two festivals comes vice versa first the brother shows his deep affirmation for the sister and later in return the sister give thanks and pray for the well- being of the brother which is the beauty of two festival celebrated in India every year.
Like any other festival this festival of Bhai Dooj is also trace down as a traditional festival. According to the myth and legend the Hindus called this festival as Yama Dwiteeya. They believe on this day the Yamaraj which they considered the lord of the Death and the Custodian of Hell made a visit to his sister Yami during which she put a mark on his brother's forhead and prayed for his well-being. It was from then on this festival was kept. The day of visit was kept as an auspicious day and celebrated every year in commemoration of the bond of two siblings. The Hindus from then had a great believe that whoever receives a tilak from his sister on this day will never be hurled into hell. This why the brothers favours their sisters and get the gifts of tilak from his sisters as a sign of prayer and protection.
Besides the Hindus the Jains and other religious community too believe in different myth and legend and celebrate in myriad forms. Though different religion follow different methods, myths and legend the pure underlying significance of this festival is tying family bonds tighter and bring social attachment. Apart from this it also gives a great opportunity and good time for those married women to come together and share the unity of family with post- Diwali glee. As the festival falls just after the days of Diwali, women all across India eagerly prepare and wait for this day to come and visit their own hometowns to their own mother's home to meet her dear ones (born siblings)
