List of Names of Famous Churches in India With Their Architecture & Images

Christianity is one of the most widespread and major religions of the world. Records of early scholars and Christian writings state that Christianity was first brought to the shores of India by Thomas the Apostle in the year 52 AD. It is said that he visited the Muiziris in Kerala where a Jewish settlement was present. There are speculations about the origins of Christianity in India but it is the general belief that by 6th century AD it had been established. The first churches of India are believed to be established by Apostle Thomas which we today know as "The Seven Churches". As time went on and India started to grow as a business hub for the west which led to the Dutch, Portuguese, English and other Christian European countries colonizing and settling. They began building their own churches with their own country's influence and patron saints. As a result of the diversity in architecture, origin, patron saints and way of worship along with fusion of Indian influences the churches that we see today in India have a sense of uniqueness and ancient aura. India is also known to be the home of the world's oldest existing church which is believed to be built by Apostle Thomas himself during the 57th AD. This church is known as the Thiruvithamcode Arapally or Thomiayar Kovil at Thiruvithancode in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. With a history preceding hundreds of years, Indian churches are ancient monuments that have withstood the test of time to tell future generations stories of the past and keep the faith alive.
