This stone gets its name from its appearance which is dark green in colour with red spots that look like droplets of blood. It is referred to as heliotrope in Greek which means the sun turning. There is a belief that when this stone is immersed in water the sun turns red. Commonly this stone is also known as blood jasper. It has a glassy to waxy texture and has a very inconsistent colour tone. A good quality blood stone is usually solid dark green in colour with clear veins of red.
